Actress Denise Richards, six months pregnant with her second child by actor Charlie Sheen, filed for divorce from the Two and a Half Men star Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior court citing “irreconcilable differences.”
“We are deeply saddened by the recent events and out of our love and concern for our daughter Sam, our unborn child and each other, we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time,” reads a statement from the couple released by Sheen’s rep, Stan Rosenfield, to PEOPLE on Thursday.
Richards, 34, and Sheen, 39, were married in June 2002. They first met while shooting the movie Good Advice in 2000, but it wasn’t until Richards guest starred on Sheen’s former sitcom Spin City in the fall of 2001 that a romance began to blossom.
The couple’s daughter Sam was born on March 9, 2004. Sheen also has a daughter, Cassandra, 20, from a previous relationship.
In her filing, Richards asked for legal and physical custody of her children with visitation rights for Sheen.
