Charlie Sheen and his daughter Sam recently shared their first one-on-one time since the actor separated from Denise Richards in March, a source tells PEOPLE.
Over the weekend Sheen and the couple’s 1-year-old enjoyed some father-daughter bonding and visited Sheen s parents in Malibu, the source says, adding that it was the first time the actor has been alone with his daughter in weeks. (A rep for Sheen wouldn’t comment.)
“He loves Sam,” says another insider. “He’s very attentive to her and always has been.”
Sheen’s CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men is currently on hiatus, and the star is not taking on any new work so that he will be free for the birth of the couple’s second baby, due in June.
Says a friend of Sheen’s: “He wants to be around to enjoy the birth of his child.”
Richards filed for divorce from her husband in March when the actress was six months pregnant. Richards, 34, took the unusual step of requesting sole legal custody of Sam and the couple’s unborn child (Sheen requested joint custody). The move, if successful, would mean that Sheen, 39, can no longer make decisions about the health and welfare of his children – though he could have visitation.
But despite the legalities, a friend of Richards’s says that “Denise expects Charlie to be a part of their children’s lives. She’s not looking to cut ties with him as a father.”
