Demi Moore spoke out for the first time about persistent tabloid stories that she is pregnant, telling PEOPLE: “The rumors are just that: rumors.”
While at the New York nightclub Marquee on Wednesday night, Moore, 42, and boyfriend Ashton Kutcher, 27, were the buzz of the VIP section. The couple tried to avoid addressing the baby talk, but when asked about the stories, Moore smiled and said they were “rumors.”
Kutcher, who has been making the talk show rounds to promote his latest film Guess Who, has been playfully dodging the baby question all week.
On March 13, Britain’s tabloid News of the World first published a story claiming the couple were eight weeks pregnant. “Why am I the last person to find out everything?” Kutcher joked to reporters that afternoon while promoting his movie. “I’m going to be a daddy? God, no one tells me anything.”
Later, Moore’s rep Stephen Huvane dismissed the report with a carefully worded reply: “Having another child is something Demi would like to do, but she cannot at this time say she is pregnant.”
Kutcher also ducked the question on David Letterman’s show, saying that the story wasn’t true, “not that I know of. I mean, we had sex this week, so it could be.” He continued the zingers on MTV’s Total Request Live, joking that “I took a pregnancy test this morning. I peed negative.”
While Kutcher told Letterman he “absolutely” wants to have children, for now, he seems happier playing coy than playing dad-to-be. “If she is (pregnant),” he told Letterman, “I gotta go find some guy and kick his ass.”
