Nevermind the movie stars – it was Dame Shirley Bassey who delivered one of the most memorable highlights at this year’s Academy Awards.
Performing her iconic James Bond theme “Goldfinger” as part of the film franchise’s 50th anniversary, the singer, who also sang the Bond themes for “Diamonds are Forever” and “Moonraker,” proved she’s still got the pipes (and a physique to die for) at 76 years old.
Born in Wales, she started singing in her teens in local clubs and earned early fame with chart-topping hits like “As I Love You” in 1959. After reaching American audiences with her Bond themes, Bassey continued to tour and record in the ’80s and ’90s, and in 1999 was given the title “Dame Commander” for her contributions to the arts by the Queen.
Though she still performs today, the grandmother of four lives a quiet life in Monaco.
