Mack Hacking confessed that he killed his pregnant wife Lori in her sleep, then disposed of her remains in a trash dumpster, Salt Lake City District Attorney David Yocum told reporters Tuesday.
According to a probable cause statement, Hacking, 28, told a “reliable citizen witness” in the psychiatric ward of Utah Medical Center what he did with his wife.
A statement from the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Department also says that investigators found human blood on a knife in the bedroom of the couple’s apartment and on their bed’s headboard and a bedrail.
Blood found in the bedroom matched traces of blood found in Lori Hacking’s car, say prosecutors.
Lori Hacking, 27, an assistant stockbroker, was last seen on July 18, and her body has yet to be recovered. A search is expected to resume in a Salt Lake City landfill on Wednesday.
Mark Hacking reported his wife’s disappearance on July 19, telling family, friends and police that she failed to return from a morning jog at a park near downtown, though police are now saying it is unlikely that Lori ever made it to the park. Mark was admitted to the mental ward on July 20, after police found him naked, running around a local motel.
Hacking was arrested this past Monday – when police learned he was about to be released from the hospital – on a charge of aggravated murder, but has not been formally charged. He is being held without bail in a Salt Lake City jail, on a suicide watch.
