Courtney Love Sentenced to Drug Rehab

Posted on

Pledging herself to sobriety, Courtney Love on Tuesday made her first public appearance since being hospitalized as a fugitive on July 9 and was sentenced to mandatory drug treatment in one of four criminal cases against her.

“I’ve got to stop drinking. It’s gonna be fun,” the rocker, 40, told a mob of reporters outside the Los Angeles courthouse following the brief proceeding. “It’s profound, it’s deep.”

Judge Patricia Schnegg ordered Love, whose sentence was part of a plea bargain, to check into a court-approved rehab program for her entire 18-month probation. The entertainer must also submit to random drug testing and substance-abuse counseling, Reuters reports.

“This is about prescription medication, Valium and Xanax,” a cheerful Love, wearing a lavender skirt suit and three-inch purple pumps, told reporters. “So let’s see, America, can I stop (using drugs and alcohol)?”

Love has until Oct. 29 to check into rehab, the judge said, though the rocker’s lawyer, Michael Rosenstein, told reporters that his client has been sober and undergoing drug treatment since shortly after her hospitalization in New York on July 9. He added that she spent time at a Connecticut treatment center for substance abuse.

If Love successfully completes the program to which she was sentenced Tuesday, and sticks to the terms of her probation, she will be spared any jail time and her conviction will be erased from her record.

In May, Love pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of being under the influence of cocaine, stemming from her arrest last Oct. 2 outside the Los Angeles home of Jim Barber, her former manager and boyfriend. Police said she was found breaking windows in the middle of the night.

Hours later, Love was treated at a local hospital for what police called a “medical emergency” in an incident that led to separate felony charges of illegal possession of the prescription painkiller OxyContin.

On Thursday, Love is due in a Beverly Hills court hearing on the possession charge and she has an arraignment in Los Angeles next month on yet another case, felony assault charges arising from a fight she had with another woman in April (also at the home of Barber).

Love also has been charged with reckless endangerment in New York related to a Manhattan nightclub incident.
