Dealing with boyfriend Nick Loeb’s serious car accident of last week, Modern Family‘s vivacious matriarch Sofia Vergara is managing to remain characteristically upbeat.

“She’s tired, but she’s doing better,” Vergara’s costar Sarah Hyland tells PEOPLE. “[Nick]’s in the hospital still, but she’s dealing with it as best as Sofia can. She’s a very strong woman.”

Hyland says Vergara’s castmates on the Emmy-winning best comedy series have offered their support and assistance to the actress during this difficult time, but she has humbly declined.

“She’s so strong that she really doesn’t need anybody to do anything,” Hyland says. “We said we’re sorry, and if there’s anything we can do to help, we offer it. But she doesn’t need it. She’s Sofia – she’s good. Nothing’s going to bring her down.”

Loeb was extracted from his vehicle by a rescue team after his car crashed off a cliff in Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon. He was taken to the ICU at UCLA Medical Center.
