He may already be 40, but Chaz Bono has finally begun to experience that rite of passage for young guys everywhere: the first shave.
“I shave about once a week now,” Bono, 40, tells Entertainment Tonight in an interview to air Thursday and Friday. “It kind of started to come in just like peach fuzz. I always wanted to shave. It is a very natural process. For my birthday I got a lot of shaving stuff.
Chaz, the son of singer Cher and the late Sonny Bono, began the process of a sex change in March. Formerly known as Chastity, he has now had his breasts removed and is on a permanent regimen of hormones, he says.

“Still not anywhere near what I will look like, but really for the first time I am feeling much more comfortable with how I look physically,” he says.
Also not settled: how Cher feels about the shaving. When he came out as a lesbian to his mom at age 18, Cher briefly kicked him out of their home. In June, she told PEOPLE she supports her child’s decision to pursue a sex change.
“Chaz is embarking on a difficult journey, but one that I will support,” she said. “I respect the courage it takes to go through this transition in the glare of public scrutiny and although I may not understand I will strive to be understanding. The one thing that will never change is my abiding love for my child.”
“The most important thing about this for me is that my outsides are finally starting to match my insides,” Chaz tells ET. “I feel like I’m living in my body for the first time, and it feels really good.”
