Could a humble bottle of ketchup have stood between Charlize Theron and her Oscar-winning acting career?

The way she tells it when recounting her first-ever acting audition, quite possibly.

“I remember I was in a catsuit. I had never auditioned before, and I almost brought a bottle of ketchup and squirted it all over myself for the scene where I got shot,” Theron tells W in its February issue, on newsstands Jan. 24.

“I looked like a maniac,” she says of her audition for the film 2 Days in the Valley. “It was a dying scene, so I barged through the door and started crawling on the floor. I think they were too scared not to give me the role.”

Years later, she has an impressive bank of work behind her, including the upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman.

And Theron, like her character Mavis in her latest film Young Adult, admits to giving nature a little boost sometimes with flesh-colored glue-on gel-filled “breasts” (often called chicken cutlets).

“I wear those!” the actress, 36, says. “If you don t have boobs, you wear those cutlets. I heard a story of a girl who was on a date, started making out, and thought, ‘Oh, he’s going to touch the cutlets!’ … It’s just the most bizarre, unsexy thing there is.”

She also talks about her time growing up in South Africa, and says she had a tough time on the dental front.

“For the first eight years of my life, I didn’t have front teeth,” she says. “I was pretty sick as an infant, and antibiotics rotted them. But then I started to take dance class, and I eventually got some teeth.”

W will celebrate its annual Best Performances issue and the Golden Globes Friday night in Los Angeles.
