By Ruperta Urresta Hernandez, her 107th birthday, at ceremonies in Texas in which her family also saw her sworn in by the Immigration and Naturalization Service as the oldest person ever to become a naturalized U.S. citizen. Hernandez — who had fled to Texas in 1915 to escape civil strife in Nuevo Leon, Mexico — was saluted by family members Wednesday after a simple ceremony in the backyard of her son’s San Antonio home.
