Cause Celeb: Diddy to Make Run for It

Posted on

Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs is getting ready to run, only not for office.

On Tuesday, the music and sportswear entrepreneur, 32, announced that he’s running in the Nov. 2 New York City marathon to help raise $1 million for health-care and education charities that benefit the city’s children, reports Reuters.

Furthermore, he vowed to cover the grueling 26.2-mile course (which snakes through all five of the city’s boroughs) in about four hours.

“Every child needs quality education and health care to train for the marathon of life,” said Combs, sporting a Nike tracksuit (as opposed to one of his own Sean John outfits) at a press conference at the midtown Manhattan Niketown.

In fact, Nike Inc. is one of Combs’s corporate sponsors for his run, as are McDonald’s, MTV Networks and some unnamed but reportedly high-profile pals.

The money raised will be divided among New York City public schools, the Children’s Hope Foundation (which supports families affected by HIV and AIDS) and Combs’s own charity, Daddy’s House Social Programs.

As Combs stressed at the press conference, it’s not just money that he will need to reach the finish line. “It’s gonna be a rough one,” he said, having already placed himself on a high-protein, low-carb diet.

“Probably around the 13th mile, I’ll really need your support — water, Gatorade, whatever,” Combs told the assembled.

Reuters adds that MTV is making a documentary chronicling his training as he readies for the event, while the New York Post says that Diddy announced that he also hopes to beat Oprah Winfrey’s time in the 1994 Washington, D.C., marathon, which was 4:20.
