Castro: Elian's Dad Is Coming

Posted on

In his first national TV interview, Elian Gonzalez, 6, told Diane Sawyer on “Good Morning America” on Wednesday that he does not want to be visited by his father from Cuba, “because he’ll take me to Cuba, and I don’t want to go to Cuba.” Today, Elian’s father is preparing to come to Miami to reclaim his motherless child, according to an announcement made last night by Cuban President Fidel Castro. Castro, appearing on Cuban TV, said that Juan Miguel Gonzalez is “ready to immediately” go to Florida if the U.S. government — which has said that the boy must be returned to his father — would commit itself to turning the boy over to him. A State Department official told The New York Times that Elian’s father had yet to ask for permission to enter the U.S. Family members of Elian in Miami are defying the federal decision to send the boy home.
