“Yeah, we’re buddies!” Smart, 26, told reporters Thursday in Los Angeles.
Jennifer Lopez‘s beau joined Kylie and Kendall Jenner, Wiz Khalifa and more stars celebrating the preview of rapper Tyga‘s new flagship store, Last Kings. Smart said he has two very good reasons for keeping things cordial with the pop star’s ex-husband: Lopez and Anthony’s twins, Max and Emme, who turn 6 on Saturday.
“Anything can be awkward if you let it be awkward, but if you don’t, if you rise above it immediately, then it’s not awkward,” Smart said. “When there’s kids involved in anything you can’t let ego or pride or any of that get in the way, because kids are more important than anything.”
Anthony and Lopez filed for divorce in 2012 after eight years of marriage. They’ve famously remained close despite their split, collaborating on a Latin American reality show and even performing together at a concert.
Lopez, 44, began dating Smart two years ago, but the American Idol judge has been coy about whether wedding bells are in their future. She has been married three times.
“I don’t know. We’ll see. I don’t know,” she told journalists in January. “You know, I’ve always believed in that institution. I believe in it, but it is difficult. I’ve had my challenges, but at the same time I believe in love, and I think that is the main thing.”
