Carly Rae Jepsen has sold millions of copies of her Grammy-nominated smash single “Call Me Maybe” and had a successful U.S. debut album Kiss – so did the Canadian pop star blow wads of cash on gifts for herself this Christmas?

Not exactly.

Jepsen says one of her biggest splurges this holiday season was a present for her father. “I’m getting him the same guitar that James Taylor plays,” Jepsen told PEOPLE just before Christmas. “And I’m getting it engraved.”

The gift has sentimental value for the singer. “My dad used to play guitar for me before bed and I used to kind of fall asleep listening to his songs,” she says. “It’ll be fun to return the favor and say, ‘Here’s your dream guitar!’ ”

Jepsen will ring in the new year by performing on ABC’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve and is already looking forward to a busy 2013. “I hope [2013] is as big an adventure as 2012 has been, but in a different way,” she says. “I want to continue to song write and tour. I want to keep growing and improving as much as I can.”

Might she be sick of hearing one of the year’s most inescapable pop hits – which is nominated for song of the year at the Grammys?

“Actually, it’s a little bit nostalgic for me,” she says. “It’s not about the song itself but it’s the adventure the song has taken me on. It will always hold a special place in my heart.”
