Son Tricks California Nurse into Thinking She Won the Powerball, Real Winner Still Has Not Come Forward

Posted on

This California man is going to be begging for his mom’s forgiveness for years to come.

A nurse in Pomona, California, was pranked by her son this week when he texted her a photo of what looked like a winning Powerball ticket, the Los Angeles Times reports. However, California Lottery officials soon discovered that the ticket had been doctored to match the winning numbers.

The woman has refrained from revealing her name in an effort to avoid an onslaught of media attention.

“It’s too embarrassing,” the woman’s daughter told the L.A. Times. “Everyone is congratulating us.”

After the nurse received the picture from her son, the healthcare facility where she works immediately began calling reporters to say one of their employees had won the jackpot. The company’s C.E.O. had reportedly purchased thousands of lottery tickets for his employees and patients.

Despite an abundance of similar hoaxes, officials still aren’t sure who won one of the $528 million Powerball jackpots in California on Wednesday. Records show that the ticket was purchased at a 7-Eleven in Chino Hills, California, but the ticket holder still hasn’t come forward to publicly claim their prize.

Still, some hoaxers are enjoying their 15 minutes of fame. A young man who went viral after he shared a fake winning ticket on social media told the L.A. Times that he was going to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live! next week.

Winning tickets were also sold in Florida and Tennessee. On Friday, officials confirmed that a couple had won the Tennessee jackpot.
