Brad Pitt Treated for Viral Meningitis

Posted on

Brad Pitt, who entered the hospital Monday night with what was described as a “flu-like illness,” was discharged from L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Wednesday afternoon after being diagnosed with a mild case of viral meningitis, his publicist announced.

“The actor is at home and doing well,” publicist Cindy Guagenti says in a statement.

Viral meningitis – generally regarded as serious but rarely fatal in persons with normal immune systems – involves inflammation of the tissues covering the brain and spinal cord.

Most patients recover from viral meningitis in a week, with severe illness and death uncommon, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Pitt was in the East African nation of Ethiopia last week with his Mr. & Mrs. Smith costar Angelina Jolie to pick up the actress’ second child, a newly adopted baby girl.

As she did at the beginning of the week when Pitt first checked into the hospital, Guagenti again declined on Wednesday to say if the actor, 41, contracted the illness while in Africa.
