Bobby Brown Thrown Back in Jail

Posted on

Less than two days after being released from a 60-day jail sentence, Bobby Brown is back behind bars.

A Massachusetts judge on Wednesday sentenced Brown to 90 days in jail if he cannot come up with $63,500 in child support he owes, according to the Associated Press.

Brown said he could not pay the money immediately, and an attempt by his attorney to set up a payment schedule was rebuffed by Judge Paula Carey, who ordered the singer locked up in Massachusetts’ Norfolk County House of Correction.

“I never wanted this to happen,” Brown said.

The former New Edition singer owes support for two children, ages 12 and 14, he fathered with Kim Ward. Ward’s attorney said she was seeking money “only on her children’s behalf,” AP reports.

Brown, who was more than four hours late for the hearing, said he is scheduled to release an album within a month and he’s also due to begin work on a movie soon. But a financial statement for Brown “lacks all credibility,” Judge Carey said.

Despite his success in the 1980s and early 1990s, Brown’s attorney said that the singer’s earning power had greatly diminished in recent years.

Brown had been serving time in Georgia for a probation violation related to a drunk-driving charge from 1996. But he was released in order to attend the hearing in Massachusetts.

Brown faces another hearing for misdemeanor battery against wife Whitney Houston. During an altercation, he allegedly hit Houston, leaving her with a bruised face and cut lip. Brown is due in a Fulton County, Ga., courtroom on May 5 for that charge.

Houston, who had checked herself into a month-long drug rehab program last week, exited the facility earlier this week after only five days.
