“I know right when she wrote the song she was like, ‘My gosh, I put exactly what I wanted to say into a song,'” Shelton told Extra. “Sometimes it’s hard to put it exactly how you want to say it when it’s that personal to you, and so she was so excited that she got that out, and then it ends up being this smash song that it’s turning into.”
“She deserves it,” he added. “If you go through whatever she went through to write that song, at least she’s getting something good, positive out of it.”
Immediately following the performance, Shelton, 39, jumped to his feet to give Stefani, 46, a standing ovation. He also shared his thoughts on Twitter. “Wow … @gwenstefani …. Such an amazing performance. #respect,” he Tweeted.
The country singer also shared a bit of insight on growing closer with Stefani over the past few months.
“The very happy and free Gwen is the only one I’ve ever really known other than when she was going through the divorce, that wasn’t good,” Shelton told Access Hollywood. “To see her get up there and do something that’s important to her – that’s cool.”
Stefani filed for divorce from Rossdale over the summer after 13 years of marriage. Shelton and Miranda Lambert announced their divorce this summer as well, after four years of marriage.
