It has been more than two years since singer-actress Ashanti and rapper Nelly ended their 10-year relationship, but she recently explained how important trust is in a relationship.

“I think sometimes when people have their own insecurities, it allows them to act out of character,” the 33-year-old performer said Friday on The Meredith Vieira Show. “I’ve been betrayed.”

The pair were linked on-and-off since 2003 when they met at a pre-Grammy party. They kept their relationship private, but in 2008, Nelly told PEOPLE it was “serious.”

“I think it’s always serious,” he said, “when you can hang with a person continuously … and [still] have fun.”

But in 2012, the pair called it quits. Since then, Ashanti has appeared on episodes of Army Wives among other TV shows. She is expected to appear in the movie Stuck, which is slated for a release later this year.

Still, trust issues aside, it appears Ashanti has not given up.

“It’s important to know what you want and get it,” she said. “I’m in a different place right now.”
