It’s true: Movies wouldn’t be as magical without costumes. From Fantine’s tattered red frock in Les Misérables to Mary Todd Lincoln’s period-perfect gowns (both in the slideshow above), made-for-movie ensembles say a lot about a character and stir up viewers’ emotions.

So it was only “fitting” that on Tuesday night, just days before the Oscars, Hollywood’s hottest stars got together at the Beverly Hilton Hotel to celebrate the people who make those magical fashion moments real: costume designers.

Winners at the 15th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards included Skyfall designer Jany Temime, Anna Karenina‘s Jacqueline Durran, Smash‘s Molly Maginnis and Downton Abbey‘s Caroline McCall. Judianna Makovsky, who designed such masterpieces as the Girl on Fire dress for The Hunger Games (see slideshow), earned the career achievement in film honor.

Anne Hathaway, seen with Les Mis designer Paco Delgado in the slideshow above, was honored with the Lacoste Spotlight Award for her willingness to collaborate with her clothiers.

“The fittings are hard,” Hathaway said in her acceptance speech, “but I especially treasure the moments that happen on set when all the choices have been made, rehearsal is done, you’re about to start, you look down and you believe in what you’re wearing. So that way, when you look up, you are gone and it is finally the character’s moment to come alive. It wouldn’t happen without the work you do.”

Throughout the ceremony, attended by Jon Hamm, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, Russell Crowe, Steve Martin and Ginnifer Goodwin – and hosted by Joel McHale – stars sat at tables decorated with sewing machines and dined on tomato basil soup, chicken with mushroom and artichoke, garlic mashed potatoes and a dessert trio of chocolate chip cheesecake, a mini fruit tart and chocolate mousse. A finishing touch to the evening? Mannequins, wearing costumes from film and television, placed throughout the Beverly Hilton ballroom.
