“I’m a romantic at heart,” the Oscar-nominee 28, told PEOPLE at Monday’s New York premiere of her new movie love story, One Day. Planting a smooch on Shulman, an actor and jewelry designer, before the screening, she added, “He’s the best!”
It’s a message Hathaway has been spreading. In the new Marie Claire U.K., Hathaway says of Shulman: “I am very much in love with him, [only] Adam totally ruined my plan. I was really actually looking forward to a little alone time, and then I fell in love like a fool!”
As she also told PEOPLE on Monday, “I couldn t say enough about him.”
Her relationship with Shulman is certainly less overtly dramatic than her time with Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri. They split in 2008, the same year he was sentenced to jail for wire fraud, money laundering and conspiracy.
Looking back, Hathaway refuses to cast herself as the victim in that relationship. “People deal with horrible things all the time,” she tells Marie Claire. “Downstairs in this pub, someone has a parent who is battling cancer. Someone has just lost their job. Life is really f—ed up, and it’s really painful sometimes.”
In any case, she’s focused on the future – in particular, her 30th birthday a year from this November. It’s hardly a number to be frightened of, she says.
“I think it’s the beginning of a process that really blossoms when you hit 30,” she says. “It’s when you stop apologizing for who you are. It’s nice not to know things and that’s okay. People aren’t going to judge you for asking questions. That’s such a freedom.”
She also goes into the landmark birthday looking just great. Monday night, wearing an Alexander McQueen, she admitted to having slimmed down for her role as Catwoman in next year’s The Dark Knight Rises.
“I did a lot of things,” she told PEOPLE. “Just good, old-fashioned get in the gym and sweat until you don’t have any body left.”
