Robert De Niro apparently likes to kick it old school.
The legendary Oscar-winning actor, 72, teams up with fellow Oscar winner Anne Hathaway, 32, in the upcoming odd-couple comedy The Intern – in theaters Sept. 25 – in which Hathaway plays the young boss of a booming fashion startup while he’s her unlikely, almost-octogenarian intern.
Sitting down to chat with PEOPLE in this week’s issue, the pair says their generation gap was felt offscreen as well.
“I never look at the generation gap as how are we different,” Hathaway says during the interview. “I just always think, ‘My gosh, how much more have you seen! How much more wisdom do you possess!’ ”
On the other hand, “I feel it,” De Niro says of the years between them. I have a computer but I don’t do Facebook, don’t do Twitter, don’t do … what’s the other one?”
The answer he’s looking for is “Instagram,” which Hathaway offers up with a giggle before saying “Bob, can I out you about something? He has a flip phone. We talked about it [on set] when he wasn’t around. We all thought it was cute.”
But the ever straight-faced De Niro makes no qualms about it. “They’re easy to use!” he proclaims.
