“Before the wedding in France with the kids, Brad and I were already married in California,” Jolie, 39, tells Italy’s Io Donna magazine. “As Americans, we couldn’t marry legally in France.”
The Unbroken director, who screened her WWII epic at the Vatican on Thursday, explained that the legal ceremony wasn’t exactly romantic.
“One day I said to Brad, ‘Let’s meet up at 4:30 p.m.?’ ” she said. “I called a justice of the peace and we signed the court documents.”
In December, Jolie told PEOPLE that the couple’s six children did a “great job” as wedding planners for the big day, which took place at the family’s Château Miraval estate.
“The eight of us celebrated,” she said, “and Brad and I committed our lives to the children.”
