Andy Grammer‘s secret to a successful marriage: finding ways to fall in love with his wife all over again.

The singer released his new single, “Fresh Eyes,” last week, and tells PEOPLE it’s all about seeing marriage through a different perspective to last through the highs and lows.

“I don’t know if you can force it or if there’s anything you can do to make it happen. I think if you pick someone that you love, you will continuously fall in love with them,” the musician, 32, says of how his four-year marriage with his wife, fellow singer Aijia, inspired the track.

Adds Grammer: “I know that sounds almost horribly cheesy, but that is what has to happen if you’re gonna make a relationship work for a long time: You have to keep learning new things that are interesting about this person or having them catch you off guard and have these little moments of intense appreciation.”

Indeed, the little moment that moved Grammer to pen the song came when he emerged from the bathroom in the morning and saw his wife – still groggy and sporting bedhead – begin to rock out while rapping Big Sean’s hit ”I Don’t F— with You,” unaware her husband could hear her.

Grammer hopes the track – which will appear on his forthcoming third album – resonates with fans. And he’ll likely garner some new listeners as well, as he’ll be on the road touring with Gavin DeGraw through mid-November.

“I’m really good friends Gavin and his band – a lot of the people in his band have been in my band and vice versa – so it’s gonna be like a family affair, just a really good time with a bunch of close friends,” says Grammer of the tour. “That’s really cool.”
