American Idol is now seeing 20/20, with four of the 24 hopefuls given the boot on Thursday night as viewers got their first chance to vote this season.
Gone are two men and two women: Becky O’Donohue, Stevie Scott, Bobby Bennett and Patrick Hall.
O’Donohue, 25, made news this week when Maxim magazine published sexy photos of her and her twin, Jessie, that were taken two years ago.
“I think you’re going to be a very successful model,” a sharp-tongued judge Simon Cowell said after O’Donohue received the lowest number of votes while the sweeter judge, Paula Abdul, seemed to be fighting back tears.
Scott, 19, from Fair Oaks, Calif., also got an earful from Cowell. “You just got it wrong,” he said of what he called her “forgettable” rendition of “To Where You Are.”
Bennett, 19, from Denver, was told by Cowell that his flamboyant delivery of “Copacabana” was “a nightmare that would have Barry Manilow screaming in horror.” Surmised Bennett afterwards: “He was a little rough, but that’s okay.”
Simon similarly scolded Hall, 27, Gravette, Ark., for his “average” rendition of “Come to My Window,” advising the young man: “You have to stand out in the crowd.”
Show host Ryan Seacrest announced on the air that the show had received some 40 million votes from the public. The final winner will be announced May 24.
