Alanis Morissette is on the run – for a good cause.

The singer, 35, is participating in the Bizz Johnson Trail Marathon on Oct. 11 to raise money for the National Eating Disorders Association.

Training for the 26.2 mile race through Susanville, Calif., has not only gotten Morissette in great shape; it’s also “shifted how I view food altogether,” the singer tells PEOPLE.

“I’ve learned how to enjoyably fuel myself,” she continues. “Participating in this marathon has inspired me to treat my body like an instrument.”

And the musician – who suffered from an eating disorder in her teens – hopes to make some noise and raise awareness for the importance of healthy living.

“Tapping into my athleticism again has been wildly empowering and I am excited to shine the light on NEDA and how to create a whole new relationship to my body and food and sense of self,” says Morissette.
