“How insane are you to call that young woman — who is perfect — fat?” Bertinelli, 57, said while stopping by PEOPLE Now. “That’s crazy.”
The Hot in Cleveland actress, who’s currently hosting Food Network’s Valerie’s Home Cooking, is referring to the body-shaming Gomez endured in response to pink bikini photos taken during the singer’s Mexico vacation in 2015.
Gomez, now 24, clapped back on Instagram (on which she is the most-followed user) with a photo captioned, “I love being happy with me yall #theresmoretolove.”
Dealing with her own body image issues as a child star, Bertinelli said she didn’t have Gomez’s confidence at that young of an age.
“I wish the voice that I had had in my head back then was like, ‘You’re perfect the way God made you so stop listening to all the negative voices in your head and outside your head,’” she said.
Bertinelli landed her role as Barbara Cooper on the sitcom One Day at a Time in 1975 at age 15 and recalled being told her jeans were “getting a little too tight.”
“I remember thinking, ‘Oh my god, I’m so fat,’ and I probably weighed 120 lbs., maybe 118,” she said. “I can’t get over how much I didn’t appreciate what I had then.”
Since then, Bertinelli said she’s found peace with her body image.
“We’re here specifically for a reason, in this body that we’ve been given,” she said. “I think we all need to just love what we have right now; maybe we will all be a little bit easier to get along with.”
Bertinelli told PEOPLE about her weight fluctuations in March, saying she doesn’t “worry about that because I share my love through food.”

As for Gomez, the “Bad Liar” singer — and other half to hip-hop performer The Weeknd — is still busy responding to critics today for very different reasons. As executive producer on Netflix’s teen drama 13 Reasons Why, Gomez defended the series’ decision to include the protagonist’s suicide on screen.
“This is happening every day,” she said during an appearance on Elvis Duran and The Morning Show. “So, whether or not you wanted to see it, that’s what’s happening.”
