Licenced massage therapist Liz Tortolani, who owns the boutique bathhouse cityWell in Brooklyn, New York, recommends a regular steaming and soaking ritual for optimum health.
Soaking "decreases pain, helps with muscle ailments, is good for the joints, helps with headaches and detoxes the body," Tortolani tells PEOPLE.
She credits architect Deborah Mariotti with creating the serene feel of the bathhouse, pictured here, and says, "I wanted to bring back the ancient tradition of communal bathing and taking care of oneself."
Tortolani encourages the following circuit for maximum benefit:
Take a temperate shower, then steam five to seven minutes to open the pores, then take a cool shower for a few minutes, then hop into the whirlpool, then take another cool shower, then relax in the sauna and drink some water. Finish with the coolest shower you can handle.

Try a Visceral Manipulation Massage
Unlike traditional Swedish massage that focuses on relieving muscle tension, visceral manipulation massage works to correct structural and functional imbalances in the body.
Created by French osteopath and physical therapist Jean-Pierre Barral, the approach considers the relationship among different systems in the body, but tends to focus on the organs in the torso that may hold tension.
Sometimes called an "organ massage," the practitioner may work on the liver, kidneys or small intestine using light to medium pressure.
"It takes practice in learning how to listen to [the body]," massage therapist Ramesh Narine tells PEOPLE.
"Our goal is just to wake a little something up. And everything in the body is related, so you free one part of the body and the rest responds."

If want to really see your body's problem areas, a 3-D body scan will do the trick. The scan gives you the insight you need to find out what those areas are so you can come up with a plan to improve them.

Sweat It out with an Infrared Sauna Session
The electromagnetic light produced by an infrared sauna — available at spas and wellness centers nationwide — penetrates the body on a cellular level.
“Your heart rate goes up, you’re burning calories, and you start sweating, but it’s not your typical sweat that’s water — it’s mostly toxins that you’re sweating out,” Joesph Harounian, the founder of Firm Body Evolution in West Hollywood, told PEOPLE.
Infrared saunas provide more of the usual sauna perks — including glowing skin, weight loss and muscle relief — in way less time.
“If someone could stand being in a conventional sauna for hours, they would get the same benefits, but it’s impossible to tolerate that kind of a heat and not dehydrate and have problems,” Harounian said.
