What’s Susan Sarandon‘s secret to holding on to her sex symbol status at 67?

“If you want to age gracefully, you don’t smoke cigarettes and probably laugh a lot, and get the normal amount of exercise, and eat well and stay out of the sun would be the main things,” the actress told PEOPLE at the N.Y.C. press day, July 24, for her upcoming thriller, The Calling.

“As is having an amazing makeup and hair team, that’s really the secret,” Sarandon added matter-of-factly.

While the Thelma & Louise icon‘s favorite sport may be ping-pong, her workout regimen is much more diversified.

“It helps to live in New York because I walk everywhere. I ride my bike down the West Side Highway, and I get 30 minutes on the treadmill,” says Sarandon, who plays a police officer who’s also a “cranky, pill-popping drunkard” in her new movie.

However, her fitness routine isn’t all standard – she recently took up boxing.

Someone gave me lessons as a gift, then I continued, and I like it,” the actress says. “I like the gym. It’s really fun with all the boxers, and it’s fun to hit – it’s a workout!”

Sarandon is expecting her first grandchild (from daughter Eva Amurri Martino) in August. While she has some things figured out (like what she’d like to be called and how much she wants to spoil her granddaughter), the grandma-to-be still has some learning to do.

“I have to learn to knit,” the actress says. “I do some crafty things, but I have not yet learned to knit. But I’ll do whatever she needs me to do.”

So what role does Sarandon expect to play? “Mostly I see myself as a memory maker for my kids and my grandkids,” she says. “It’s just for me to take them places and do things with them – [Eva] can hold down the fort, and I’ll do all the fun stuff.”

The Calling hits theaters Aug. 29.
