Oprah Winfrey has opened up once again about her weight loss journey, sharing intimate details about her complicated relationship with diet and exercise at the star-studded Super Soul Sessions Saturday in Los Angeles.
“I wanted to be thin,” she said of her past weight loss struggles. “I wasted so much energy, energy and time wanting my thighs to be thin, for my arms not to flap. I had the success and the money but I was still wanting something different than I had.”
Winfrey, 62, who welcomed notables including Kerry Washington, Amandla Stenberg, Eckhart Tolle and India.Arie this weekend, admitted she used food as a way to combat stress during her 20 years on The Oprah Winfrey Show, especially indulging while on vacations and binging on “go-to foods” including Spicy Cheetos and Cool Ranch Doritos.
She also copped to looking for excuses to skip exercising. The OWN head recounted a time she took a hike and sprained her ankle while staying at her ranch in Maui, which was her “license to not workout.”
“Jesus did not want me to workout, so I put my leg up and ate and drank all the vacation,” she said.
The inspirational public figure also candidly recalled the time she assessed herself in the mirror, stark naked, and realized that after six decades she’s still learning to love her body.
Winfrey said her “a-ha” moment finally came when Weight Watchers came calling.
“It felt like an intervention from on high,” she said, adding that she thought, “if they are calling me, I must need help!”
Still following the Weight Watchers plan, Winfrey told the crowd she had 18 points left for the day – and was so happy that it was going be a good dinner that evening.
