Feeling good about your body can be a challenge — and it’s even harder when people constantly comment on how you look.
“In the public eye, it’s definitely harder to not beat yourself up when you see comments that are telling you otherwise than you feel,” Hough, 28, told PEOPLE while speaking about the new Fitbit Flex 2. “[You have to tell yourself], I’m doing the best that I can right now and I’m making these conscious choices, and at the end of the day, as long as I’m happy and I’m positive and I’m feeling good, that’s all that realty matters.”
Still, she’s not immune to the things people say about her on social media.
“I post pictures of what I’m wearing or my hair from Dancing with the Stars every week, and one person says I look too skinny, and then one person down below says I look pregnant. I’m like, how does that work? Are you looking at the same picture?” she says. “At the end of the day, it is what it is.”

Having a morning routine helps her stay positive throughout the day.
“My approach is, when I wake up in the morning, I say five things that I’m grateful for, I put my Fitbit on, I play with my dogs,” she says. “I have my little routine in the morning that kind of sets the tone and sets my state for the rest of the day.”
Hough also maintains a healthy sense of self by staying true to who she is.
“Knowing your true self when you’re in a time of insecurity, for instance if somebody says something about your body, you know you’re doing the best you can,” she says. “Always stick to you and being true to yourself.”
