The actress, who presented the award for best animated picture alongside Kurt Russell, her mother Goldie Hawn‘s longtime partner (and a father-figure to Hudson), showed off her rock-solid abs in a coral, strapless crop top with a matching high-waisted skirt and choker necklace.
Hudson, 36, tells PEOPLE that she follows an alkaline diet (Kelly Ripa is also huge fan of the eating plan) in her daily life to stay slim and muscular. Because, as the saying goes, abs are made in the kitchen.
“I live by a rulebook of eating alkaline – no meat, no dairy, no gluten, I try to stay away from sugar – but I’ll cheat when I want to since I’m a bit of a foodie,” she explains.
“I try not to make it not so much about dieting, but rather everything in moderation.”
“While I try to keep my fitness regimen consistent, during awards season, I’m especially conscious of what I’ll be wearing and plan my workouts accordingly,” she explains.

And to offset the beachy look she often favors, Hudson says she’ll go for a spray tan the night before an awards show.
“If I feel like I need a little color, I’ll get a natural spray tan,” she says. “Not only does this give me a little extra coverage, but it also allows me to achieve the bronzed look I want without the sun damage.”
But when she’s preparing to face down a cadre of screaming photographers on the red carpet, it’s likely her regular meditation practice that gets Hudson through the flashing lights.
“This is a key part of my daily routine, even if it’s just five minutes when I focus and quiet my mind,” she says.
“Typically, I concentrate on a color and set intentions such as clarity, peace, calmness and love. I focus in on these intentions and breathe.”
