To most who know her name, Reese Witherspoon is the epitome of a poised, well-spoken Hollywood star.
But at home, it’s a little bit of a different story.
“My kids do this whole thing where they make fun of me because I’ll say, ‘He did do, but he didn’t done do. He done did that,’ ” Witherspoon, who was born in New Orleans and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, said in an interview with Jenna Bush Hager for Friday’s episode of the Today show.
“My little 4-year-old will be like, ‘He did done do!’ They think it’s hysterical. They don’t understand what I’m saying. ‘You can’t do … if you’re trying to do, you can’t done,’ ” she jokes. “I always know what I’m saying, [and] sometimes [other] people do.”

But Witherspoon isn’t the only one posing communication challenges in her family. She and husband Jim Toth have another language to decode on the regular: teenager.
“I have two teenagers, and I’ve discovered that they will Snapchat me back, but they will not call me back,” says Witherspoon, whose older children’s father is ex-husband Ryan Phillippe. “And I think it’s important for people to communicate well with their children.”
But even though her kids aren’t the best at phone time, Witherspoon admits Ava is a huge help when it comes to her mom’s fashion choices.
“I usually ask my daughter, my 17-year-old daughter, ‘Does this look good?’ and she’ll be honest with me,” the actress explains. “She’ll be like, ‘No. You do not look good. You cannot wear that.’ So I depend on her brutal honesty.”
