Peyton Lambton’s Blog: Inside My Daughter Lyla’s Gender-Neutral Nursery

Peyton Lambton is a new mom!

The costar of HGTV’s Going Yard and DIY Network’s Yard Crashers host Chris Lambton met through their appearances on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, respectively.

They’ve appeared together on specials including My New Old House, HGTV Dream Home and HGTV Smart Home, and recently completed building their own dream home near the Massachusetts coast.

Peyton, 33, and Chris, 39, were married in 2012. They welcomed their first child — daughter Lyla James — in November and are also “parents” to Summit, a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog.

You can find Peyton on her website, as well as on InstagramFacebook and Twitter @peytonwlambton.

She’s here! I honestly can’t believe we have a daughter. This whole family is in shock because we were convinced we would be a family of boys. Now we have a little princess to spoil and I am so looking forward to that.

Before her arrival, I went crazy trying to create the perfect nursery. It was a challenge because we didn’t know the gender, but I love a good challenge! I am so proud that I could design the entire nursery and put it all together myself. The vision I had in my head for this space really came together nicely and I hope Lyla James will be as comfortable here as I am.

Choosing a design and color scheme for a gender-neutral nursery wasn’t as easy as I’d expected. I wanted an organic space, but one that would also provide happy vibes without being too overwhelming. It also needed to blend with the style we’ve incorporated into the rest of the house.

We have a lot of gray and blue, so I decided on a mint green as the wall color and built out from there. Instead of just painting all the walls solid, I decided to tape out a design on the crib wall to make it more interesting. The lines provide that organic feel I wanted and remind me of trees in the forest.

I chose a gray wash for the crib and dresser because it reminds me of driftwood you find on the beach. This element blends with the beach vibes we have around the rest of the house.

I added a wingback rocker that reclines for ultimate comfort during those late-night feedings. I figured this would also be nice for Chris, since he is so tall. To balance all the gray in the room, I finished things off with a plush white rug to provide something soft and warm on the floor. Our dog Summit really loves the rug and curls up every chance she gets!

The bedding and curtains gifted by Carousel Designs fit perfectly with the room’s décor scheme. I had so much fun using their online Nursery Designer tool to create my own unique custom bedding, and the arrow and owl motifs couldn’t be cuter or more perfectly gender neutral.

To make the room more personal, I had my dad build bookshelves that add style to the wall above the rocker. We received so many books, and I wanted a fun way to display them. It also adds some nice color to the wall and we can easily see what books are available. I can’t wait for Lyla to be able to pick her own books to read.

Another special touch is the wooden toys my grandfather made for me when I was a baby. I was so happy my mom saved these for me to pass on. In the corner of the room is a measuring stick that was made by a childhood friend, and on the rocker is a handmade blanket from another friend I grew up with.

These special touches are what really made the room come together. I look forward to telling Lyla about these special friends and all the love that went into the gifts they gave her.

The final piece of organization came with the closet. I am a sucker for a well-organized closet, so I wanted something that would grow with the baby. The elfa Shelving System provided by The Container Store was what I had in my room growing up, so I knew it would be the perfect solution for our closet needs.

I worked with one of The Container Store’s Contained Home Organizers to design the elfa custom closet of our dreams, which was then installed by their team. There are so many drawers and bins! The clothes are so tiny right now that they hardly take up any space, but as Lyla grows, we can adjust the system to fit her needs. I have a feeling we will fill it up very quickly!

Even though Lyla won’t use this room for a little while, it’s nice to have everything in place and ready for her. So far, we have enjoyed rocking and reading, but I can’t wait to see her grow in this room and one day make it her own.
