Dallas Buyers Club is one of the most buzzed-about films of this year’s awards season, but oddly enough, one of its stars hasn’t even watched the critically acclaimed piece of work.

“I haven’t seen the film,” Jared Leto, 42, told PEOPLE on Saturday just before winning his very first Screen Actors Guild award for male actor in a supporting role.

Leto, who plays transgender AIDS patient Rayon, went on to say, “I thought it was better to get some perspective first and let the film marinate. I’ll watch it one day.”

Whether he’s seen the film or not, the actor has made one thing clear over the past few months: He’s very passionate about the role.

“It’s wonderful to be part of a story that celebrates an important part of our history here in America and shines the light on the challenges that go with HIV/AIDS,” Leto told reporters, before saying backstage that transgendered people were his mentors throughout filming.

When he was in the midst of shooting in November 2012, Leto gave fans a glimpse into his preparation to play Rayon.

“I just waxed my legs for this new role,” he Tweeted and Instagrammed at the time. “Time to get into character. Pluck pluck pluck. Filming this week. Ladies, I feel your pain. What I have learned today: Beauty is pain.”
