From her skater girl past to her high-fashion present, Gwen Stefani has always been an original.

The singer, who heads her own successful fashion empire, was honored with the Style Icon award at the PEOPLE Magazine Awards on Thursday.

“This is crazy. I have always loved fashion,” said Stefani as she accepted her award at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. “I was a little girl playing Barbies and my mom was making clothes for me.”

The award was presented by her fellow Voice coach Pharrell Williams. The pair also teamed up to perform her new single, “Spark the Fire,” at the awards show.

“I love people with style and she has it every day and in every way,” said Pharrell. “Over the years, we have seen her amazing and glamorous looks everywhere.”

The longtime friends are also collaborating on Stefani’s third solo album, which she told fans would be out “sometime in December.”
