Jonah Hill Tries to Play It Cool with His 2 Nominations

Jonah Hill has double the reason to celebrate: this week he snagged two major nominations for his supporting role opposite Brad Pitt in Moneyball – one from the Screen Actors Guild and one – a Golden Globe – from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

And yes, this puts him squarely in the running for an Oscar nod.

Though he admits to feeling “fantastic,” the comedian-turned-dramatic actor, 27, told PEOPLE from the Atlanta set of the upcoming movie Neighborhood Watch, “I have been trying not to get wrapped up in all of this, in everything.”

“Any expectation of getting a SAG nomination or an Oscar nomination are sort of absurd expectations to put on yourself,” he says. “So the fact that I actually got this nomination was so overwhelmingly moving and thrilling and surreal. I am really just kind of shocked.”

“The phone calls and emails I have gotten today are unlike any I have ever experienced. I feel like I got married or had a kid or something. I have never had anything like this happen to me before. My parents were actually crying.”

For the Globe, he’s up against Kenneth Branagh in My Week with Marilyn, Albert Brooks in Drive, Viggo Mortensen in A Dangerous Method and Christopher Plummer in Beginners. For the SAG honor, his category also includes Branagh and Plummer, as well as Armie Hammer in J. Edgar and Nick Nolte in Warrior.

Speaking on Wednesday, when he only had the SAG nomination under his belt, Hill said of his fellow contenders, “I am so in shock and awe right now that I can not even begin to conceptualize the fact that I am up there with them.”

But he’s counting his blessings.

“It is not too often you get the second lead opposite Brad Pitt [also SAG and Globe nominated] in a film,” said Hill. “It did feel like a momentous occasion in my life when I got the part, and it was.”
