Angelina Jolie will be bringing home a second Oscar, but not for a performance on the silver screen.
The actress will be receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her volunteer work, the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Thursday.
Jolie, who won in 2000 for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Girl, Interrupted, will receive one of four honorary awards, with the others going to Angela Lansbury, Steve Martin and Piero Tosi.
“The Governors Awards pay tribute to individuals who’ve made indelible contributions in their respective fields,” said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. “We couldn’t be more excited for this year s honorees and look forward to bringing their peers and colleagues together to celebrate their extraordinary achievements.”
While Jolie is being recognized for her work with global advocacy groups like the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, for which she was appointed as a Special Envoy in 2012 after 12 years of service, Lansbury will receive her first Academy Award in recognition of her extensive film career.
Lansbury has been nominated for three Oscars but never won – for Gaslight in 1944, The Picture of Dorian Gray in 1945 and The Manchurian Candidate in 1962. She also did voice work as Mrs. Potts in the first animated feature to receive a Best Picture nomination, Beauty and the Beast.
In addition to his well-known roles in The Jerk, Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, Three Amigos, Roxanne, L.A. Story and The Pink Panther, Steve Martin wrote and starred in the 1977 Oscar-nominated short film The Absent-Minded Waiter. He also hosted the Academy Awards three times.
Though his Tweets are often irreverent, Martin’s response via Twitter was one of serious gratitude. “I’m proud to win an honorary Oscar this year. A salute to comedy and all the great people I’ve worked with.”
Piero Tosi is an Italian costume designer who is known for his collaborations with director Luchino Visconti on such films as White Nights and Death in Venice. He has been nominated for the Academy Award for Costume Design Five times.
