Before his 10-hour graveyard shifts, Garcia, 35, hits the gym for 40 minutes of strength-training and 30 minutes on the elliptical up to five times a week with trainer-nutritionist Dawn Broden.
Garcia admits he’s still developing a taste for veggies. “I am training myself to eat spinach,” he says. “But I love making chicken fajitas and putting in a ton of peppers.” And to satisfy his sweet tooth, Garcia says Broden allows him “300 calories of something I like, like frozen yogurt,” two to three times a week.
YVONNE’S WEIGHT-LOSS PLAN
At first Beretta, 48, couldn’t stand on her feet for more than five minutes without getting tired. Now she’s up to a 60-minute workout comprised of cardio intervals and strength training.
With the help of her nutritionist Cher Pastore, Beretta has cut her daily calories by half to 2,000—in large part by reducing the half-gallon of juice she used to drink (total: 1,200 calories!) to only two glasses.
For dinner, Beretta opted for fast-food meals or high-fat entrées when she ate out, such as General Tso’s chicken.
Beretta opts for a lean protein at each meal, like dinner of roast chicken with vegetables, or a turkey sandwich.

Beretta keeps a food journal to track calories. And if she cheats? “I write it down and Cher will scold me!”
LOST 13 LBS.
The married father of four sons squeezes in a 40-minute workout—and a pickup basketball game!—after dropping off his kids at school. “I want to tone up and lose my handles,” Novoa, 31, says. Also helping are the two organic protein bars—instead of candy—that his trainer Eric Harr suggests he eat during his nine-hour shifts navigating San Francisco’s streets. Says Novoa: “I can feel a change in my attitude.”
LOST 10 LBS.
The biggest shock for Macaraeg? She has to eat more! “She’d go hours without food,” says her Maryland-based nutritionist Elizabeth Blumberg, causing her body to go into starvation mode and not burn calories effectively. Now Macaraeg, 29, eats every three hours, swapping her old lunch of Doritos for pork tenderloin and steamed veggies, and takes spinning classes. “My double chin is almost gone!” she says.
LOST 14 LBS.
Surprisingly, her biggest challenge hasn’t been cutting back on meals; it’s been adding one: breakfast. “I’m not used to it, so it’s kind of nauseating,” says Skroback, 37, who has a bowl of whole-wheat cereal in the morning to jump-start her 1,200 calorie diet created by nutritionist Amy Kulwicki. Skroback also exercises an hour, five days a week, mixing in activities like racquetball with trainer Craig Hoxie. “It’s a major stress-reliever,” she says.
LOST 2 LBS.
The Naples, Fla., native got off to a rough start: Although his trainer-nutritionist Betsy Opt suggested he stick to fresh veggies on the road, “a salad costs, like, $13!” he notes. Mauro-Rhodio, 46, now packs yogurt and apples to nibble on during his 10-hour drives and travels with a plastic bowl so he can heat up a can of soup at rest stops—where he also takes 15-minute walks with his Shih Tzu Christopher. “I really want to make a change,” he says.
