Having just finished shooting The Peacemaker in Bratislava and Macedonia, George Clooney last week squeezed in a five-day holiday in Paris before heading back to Los Angeles, where he’ll zip between the sound-stages of ER and Batman and Robin. Clooney says, “This is my first day off in months, and my first trip to Paris. Tonight, I’ll go to a cafe and drink until it closes. Tomorrow, I’ll sit in a cafe and drink black coffee until I sober up. Afterward, the Mona Lisa, the Eiffel Tower and all the usual tourist stuff.”…

Just because Esquire, in its September issue, published an exclusive picture Chelsea Clinton, 16, took of her dad doesn’t mean that Chelsea has been bitten by the photo bug. Neel Lattimore, press secretary to Chelsea’s mom, says the snapshot, taken at the request of Esquire’s writer Taylor Branch, a family friend, was a onetime thing. “She took a lot of pictures of her father, and we picked out one to send Esquire,” says Lattimore, adding that none of the others on the roll of film will be released. Esquire editor Edward Kosner said he had tried to pay Chelsea Esquire’s $400 photographer’s day rate, “but we couldn’t get her Social Security number from the White House. So I sent her a note saying all we have to offer is our appreciation.”…

Yes, Lyle Lovett is really dating Good Morning America newscaster Elizabeth Vargas. Lovett, who split with wife Julia Roberts in 1995, became smitten with Vargas in June when he did GMA to hype his latest album. I hear it took him repeated calls to her in Manhattan to convince her to go out….

How’s this for synergy in Hollywood? Universal is building an island on its back lot that Steven Spielberg will use for The Lost World: Jurassic Park 2. After JP2 comes out next spring, the island will become a Universal Studios Hollywood theme-park attraction….

Woody Allen offered Elliott Gould the lead in his next movie, set to start in the fall. Gould very much wanted the job, but he was already signed to an eight-month tour of the play Death Trap. Gould asked the producers to let him out of his contract. They refused, despite lobbying by Allen and by Gould’s ex, Barbra Streisand. “We are proceeding with Gould,” says producer Manny Kladitis. Allen has yet to cast the role….

Martina Navratilova, 39, and new girlfriend, model Hunter Reno, 27, niece of Attorney General Janet Reno, recently returned stateside after a working vacation in Fiji, where Reno fronted a documentary for TV’s Travel Channel. A source tells me Navratilova’s romance with Reno “is very together.”…

Sharon Stone, Michael Douglas, David Caruso and Jon Voight were among those watching as Paramount Pictures head Sherry Lansing received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on July 31. One wag claims that, during the ceremony, L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan seemed to be looking directly at some of the celebrities when he addressed the throng as “film bluffs, I mean buffs.”
