What better for movers and shakers to wear than something that shakes when they move? Fringe—whether it’s fancy like Heidi Klum‘s crimson gown or fanciful like Charlize Theron‘s sparkly frock—is a fun vintage detail that “adds a touch of seduction,” says Stefano Gabbana of the design duo Dolce & Gabbana. “One of the icons we looked at for this collection was Marilyn Monroe and her alluring sex appeal.” For other celestial bodies in motion like Lisa Marie Presley and Daryl Hannah fringe is just a fun way to jazz up an otherwise ho-hum number. Who couldn’t use a little bounce—and shimmy—in their step?
Behind the Seams
Talk about role reversal. Charlize Theron, who packed on 30 lbs. to play a serial-killing prostitute in the upcoming crime drama Monster, did an about-face,-hair,-body and-wardrobe in a demure Valentino silk beaded blouse and full-pleated skirt at the film’s world premiere in Hollywood.
DRAMA CLASS: First, she had the hairstyle that launched a million copy cuts. Now Jennifer Aniston has donned a T-shirt that is creating a frenzy. Mrs. Brad Pitt wore Rogan NYC’s cotton “Save the Drama for Your Mama” tee on a recent Friends episode. and people went nuts. Stores sold out immediately, Rogan’s office was flooded with calls and e-mail, and fans created online chat rooms to discuss alternate acquiring methods. The shirt is back on shelves and up for a best drama Emmy….

FAMILIAR RING: When Robert Downey Jr. decided to pop the question to producer Susan Levin, he called longtime pal Loree Rodkin—who designs jewelry for Cher and Elton John—to create a diamond and rare African sapphire engagement ring. And he gave her two weeks to do it. “That’s so Robert,” said Rodkin. “He has impeccable taste. He wanted something delicate and representative of his emotions.” No small order….
This ring is a smaller version of Downey’s, $5,929; 888-L-RODKIN.
DESIGNING DIVAS: Given her body-baring duds, I’m not sure that Jennifer Lopez knows much about underwear, but despite that, her new lingerie line is due next fall. At the American Music Awards, Macy Gray said her clothing line, Natalie Hinds (her married name), will be out summer 2004: “It’s all glamor, Halston kind of stuff. It’s gonna be hot.”…
MOTHER LOAD: If David Letterman‘s new son Harry looks spiffy, credit his personal shopper Madonna. The Material Mom went on a Fred Segal shopping spree in LA. and had the loot shipped east so she could shower the Late Show host before her Nov. 11 appearance. Among the goodies: a Radio Flyer wagon, Adidas sneakers, tiny Ugg boots and the primo celebrity baby hauler, the $700 Bugaboo stroller. Is a Madonna and Letterman car pool next?

ANGIE’S HAIR APPARENT
It doesn’t take a Police Woman to see that singer Jessica Simpson has stolen—okay, borrowed—Angie Dickinson‘s signature ’70s bob. “That’s what we were going for but with a modern edge,” admits Simpson’s mom and stylist, Tina, of the blonde wig. “It’s fun for her to show people you can be one way but have different looks.” Another reason for the masquerade? “Nick loves her long hair, so that’s why we don’t cut it.”
Mama’s Little Helpers
How do prebirth and postpregnant celebrities contend with their new waists of space? By showing and telling the world they haven’t lost their flair for style and humor. While their bellies are big, moms-to-be like Kate Hudson and Cate Blanchett wear Bella Dahl’s soft and pliable maternity corduroys. And for après birth, they announce to the world that I “Just Had a Baby,” with Suze Houghton’s generous cotton tees—without bringing attention to the extra baby pounds. “I love them,” says proud mom Brooke Shields of the extralong, loose shirts. “The quality is wonderful.” Raves another new mom, Reese Witherspoon: “They’re great!”
