Turtle Love

Temperatures are rising and so are necklines as Hollywood trendsetters brave the dog days in turtlenecks. Sleeveless versions of the high-collared staple, as worn by Holly Hunter and Jennifer Love Hewitt, are “the new fashion basic,” explains Barbara Benenson Warren, creative director of the knitwear line White + Warren. “You can put them under a jacket or cardigan for the winter and for the summer you can have your arms showing.” That’s versatility Garcelle Beauvais can appreciate. “You’re showing a little skin but not going overboard,” says the NYPD Blue star. The tops “look better if you’ve got toned arms and good shoulders,” notes Warren. Still, the summer sun offers one advantage: a tan. Says sportswear designer Sigrid Olsen: “I don’t know if I’d wear a sleeveless turtleneck in the middle of winter when my arms are white.”

If Sarah Jessica Parker barely recognizes herself these days, put it down to one quick change too many. The star and Garnier Nutrisse hair color spokesmodel recently underwent a drastic transformation for the company’s new ad campaign. Parker went yellow-gold with Nutrisse’s Sugar Cane blonde last year. She decided to do something different this time and personally selected the sultry Brown Sugar, a reddish-brown hue she’ll unveil in TV spots airing this week. But the actress didn’t sizzle as a brunette for long. Once the daylong shoot ended, she bleached her locks back to their signature dirty blonde for her Sex and the City duties. Emergency mayonnaise treatment, anyone?…

Penélope Cruz arrived at a fashion magazine cover photo session not too long ago with a surprise accessory: Tom Cruise‘s assistant. The actress, who introduced the helpful loaner as her “friend,” was accompanied by so many additional handlers that a set source dubbed the posse Penélope’s “mega-entourage.”…

Heeding the call of a good cause, Bette Midler happily dug up a pair of shoes for an online celebrity-footwear auction organized by Zappos.com to benefit San Francisco’s homeless. The Divine Miss M donated a pair of autographed black cap-toe pumps worn in the flick Isn’t She Great? Not to be outdone, Bridget Fonda scared up the fancy Dolce & Gabbana burgundy high heels she wore in Single White Female….

Seen: Diana Ross, sweeping into New York City power lunch spot Michael’s in a diaphanous white linen blouse and linen slacks, trilling, “This is my Connecticut look.”…

Mark Wahlberg, ultrabuff in skintight black T-shirt, dandy newsboy hat and black jeans, lunching with buddies at West Hollywood’s Cafe Med….

Farrah Fawcett, looking heavenly in a lime-green slip of a summer dress, gold strappy wedgies and a black-and-white sweater draped over her shoulders, feasting on Greek goodies at Malibu’s Taverna Tony.

What fashion advice would you give First Lady Laura Bush?

Titus’s Christopher Titus

“She’s been looking pretty good. My advice? Stay mucho caliente, Laura!”

Holly Robinson Peete

“I’d say loosen up the hair. It’s too stiff. Spike it up a little like Halle Berry. In a single word—mousse.”

Naomi Campbell
“She should buy some hats! You can find great hats in Britain.”

Jennifer Love Hewitt

“I wouldn’t tell her anything. I think she looks adorable.”

Joan Rivers

“Don’t borrow anything from your mother-in-law.”

Straw Vote

Hollywood he-men like Taye Diggs, The Sopranos’ Joe Pantoliano and comedian Paul Rodriguez are flipping their lids over straw hats. The grassy toppers “complete your outfit,” says celeb stylist Jeanne Yang. Plus, she says, “there’s a certain suaveness to a man who wears a hat.” Rodriguez, a Panama devotee, agrees. “They don’t make you sweat,” he says, adding that Jon Voight, his costar in the upcoming biopic Ali, recently admired his. “I’m going to send him one.”
