BACK TO WORK
Patrick Swayze, who revealed in March that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, is well enough to work: The actor, 55, plans to film the A&E drama The Beast in August. The series, in which Swayze has a starring role playing a veteran FBI agent, will air in early 2009. “I can’t wait to get to work on this,” he said in a statement. Swayze filmed the pilot in January before his diagnosis. He’ll continue his treatment, which includes chemotherapy, throughout the four-month Chicago production, while his doctors at Stanford University Medical Center monitor him. A&E considered recasting the role, but Swayze was determined. “His energy is fantastic,” says Beast costar Sarah Danielle Madison. “I can’t imagine what it’s going to be like for him now. He’s going to be on fire.”
Ryan & Abbie
Ryan Phillippe, 33, and Australian actress Abbie Cornish, 25—who are rumored to have begun a courtship while shooting the film Stop-Loss—finally went public with their relationship on June 5 at the Australians in Film 2008 Breakthrough Awards in L.A. When Cornish, who was being honored with an award, was introduced, Phillippe rubbed her back in support. “They were cozy,” says a guest. “He had his arm around her.” And, earlier, during a group date at Dan Tana’s restaurant, a source says, “they were holding hands throughout dinner. They were adorable.”
IS PARIS PREGNANT?
The rumors are “false,” a rep for Paris Hilton, 27, tells Scoop of the speculation—fueled by the June 4 photo below—that the heiress is having a baby with beau Benji Madden.
WHAT A KNOCKOUT!
The force is truly with Amanda Lucas, 27. The daughter of George Lucas (above, with Amanda) made her mixed martial arts debut in New Zealand May 31. Said the event promoter: “She’s got strength in her punch!” She also won points for bunking at “a youth hostel … [and not being] a prima donna about it.”
LOSING HIS HOME
Heeere’s Jay to the rescue? New York’s Daily News says Tonight Show host Jay Leno would like to find a way to rescue ex-Tonight Show vet Ed McMahon from foreclosure. Leno could not be reached for comment, but McMahon, 85, owes over $644,000 in back mortgage payments and may lose his Beverly Hills home. How did Johnny Carson’s sidekick wind up broke? “If you spend more money than you make,” he told Larry King June 5. “A couple of divorces thrown in … and things happen.”
Audrina’s NEW MAN
The Hills’ Audrina Patridge, 23, has ditched bad-boy beau Justin Bobby and is now dating Tal Cooperman, 25, a partner with brothers Joel, Benji and Josh Madden in the clothing line DCMA Collective. “They were friends at first, but it’s developed into more,” says a source. On June 4 Cooperman, who is separated, and Patridge cuddled at the Billabong USA Design for Humanity event in L.A. as well as at dinner at Beso with Joel and Benji and his girlfriend Paris Hilton.
A BABY GIRL FOR TORI
Liam, 1, is going to have to share toys—and camera time—with his new sister Stella Doreen, born via C-section to Tori Spelling, 35, and husband Dean McDermott, 41, June 9 in L.A. It’s the second child for the Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood stars.
WHAT A SHOW!
Pharrell Williams and celeb hipsters took over the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel June 4 for the intimate Zune Presents N.E.R.D. show to celebrate the group’s new CD Seeing Sounds. Nicole Richie and pal Mary-Kate Olsen jumped around and sang by the side of the stage and Lindsay Lohan sweetly set up shop next to Samantha Ronson’s deejay stage to keep her company. Paris and Nicky Hilton double-dated with boyfriends David Katzenberg and Benji Madden (who gallantly escorted Paris to the ladies room).
PETE’S 29TH B-DAY
Pregnant Ashlee Simpson, 23, hosted a private dinner for new hubby Pete Wentz June 5 at Foxtail restaurant in L.A. for 30 of their friends (Emmy Rossum and Simpson’s bridesmaids were there). “Ashlee and Pete matched perfectly in all black,” says a source. The couple left past midnight after devouring the b-day boy’s favorite: red velvet cake with cream-cheese icing.
6/3: Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves supported reggae artist Mishka (signed by the actor’s new label j.k. livin) at Hollywood’s Viper Room.
6/7: Nelly admitted all is “great” with Ashanti at his concert at Las Vegas’s Red Rock Resort.
6/7: Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer nestled at a garden table at L.A.’s Chateau Marmont.
Matt’s big brother, appearing in truTV’s Black Gold, dishes about his star sibling’s childhood antics—and those abs!
HE’S MATT’S BROTHER
You ended up a pipe salesman in the oil business while Matt became an actor. Was he just not cut out for the business?
He was a better lifeguard than a pipe guy! That’s when the no-shirt thing started. I never could do that…. Hell, I don’t have a six-pack. I got me a pony keg!
Why did you name your son Miller Lyte?
Miller Lite is about all I drink. My wife said I could name our child if it was a boy and she’d pick the name if we had a girl. She was scared to death I’d name her Jenny for Genuine Draft.
Did you tease Matthew when you were kids?
I’d call him up and tell him I was the sheriff and that his brother Rooster was in jail. I’d listen to him run down the hall screaming, “Dad, Rooster is in jail and the sheriff’s on the phone.”
What’s the best perk of having him as a brother?
I can get on the local [golf] course without a tee time. All I say is, “My brother’s in town.” You should see the look on their faces when they realize I’m talking about our middle brother Patrick.
