Getting Sober Saved Me
Spending 90 days at the Betty Ford Center was one of the darkest chapters in Keith Urban‘s life. But now—nine months sober and on the heels of his one-year wedding anniversary with Nicole Kidman—the Grammy winner sees only silver lining. “It sounds strange, but I’m glad [I needed rehab],” he said in a candid July 16 interview with Nashville’s Tennessean. “There’s no doubt that what it’s done for our marriage has been truly divine…. Not going in would have cost me my career at the very least, and my marriage would have been gone.”
Although he’s back on his sellout Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy world tour, Urban now makes sure he’s never away for more than two weeks from Kidman—who, he said, “really took the reins” when it became clear he needed help. Since she’s been Down Under filming the Baz Luhrmann epic Australia since May, that means Urban has logged tens of thousands of miles for love: On June 19 he hopped on a flight to be at her side in the beach town of Bowen for her 40th birthday. After only a few days, he returned to the States for shows in Missouri, Tennessee and Georgia. And most recently the country crooner jetted back to Sydney after performing one of his fames live shows in Texas. On July 15 the couple sat side-by-side at an Aussie rules football game, cuddling between bites of a hotdog. “It was very healthy that he set aside the world of entertainment to take care of himself,” says a source close to Urban. “And he has continued to take care of himself and his marriage.”
These days, for the 39-year-old Urban, it’s all about striking a balance between work and family. “I’m trying to find a quality of life, and that comes with trade-offs and sacrifices,” he told the newspaper. “Playing massive stadiums is not going to fill any hole in me.” What will? His music and his faith, of course. Not to mention some good ol’ fashioned couple time in Nashville, where the Aussie natives plan to hole up once his tour wraps this fall. “When you go through something as life-altering as three months in rehab, there will be lots of changes—in your priorities and in how you balance your life,” says a longtime friend. “It’s clear that is what has happened to Keith.”
Lindsay Lohan may be back on the club scene, but she wants the world to know she’s taking her sobriety seriously. The actress, who completed her 45-day treatment program at Malibu’s Promises clinic July 13, did promptly jet to Vegas—but she is voluntarily wearing an alcohol-monitoring anklet 24 hours a day. (The tamper-proof, high-tech trinket tests the wearer’s sweat—and sends out a notification if any alcohol is detected. It should ensure, says her rep, that there are no “questions about her sobriety.”) So far the actress—who turned 21 July 2—has been on her best behavior. She stuck to Red Bull and water at Pure nightclub in Vegas July 14 as she chatted up Criss Angel. And back in L.A. the next night, Lohan drank only bottled water. Notes an onlooker: “It was tame.”
Drew Barrymore & Spike Jonze
Now playing: Drew and Spike—the Sequel. Despite Barrymore’s recent rendezvous with Zach Braff, it looks like the actress and her director beau of four months are still hot and heavy. After catching a show at El Rey Theatre July 10 (where they smooched sweetly), the couple cozied up once again outside the Sunset Tower Hotel. “They were really cute and kissing pretty passionately,” says an onlooker. Why the suitor switcheroo? “Drew hasn’t been dating anyone seriously,” says a source, “and probably won’t for a while.”
Adrian Grenier lands lots of ladies on Entourage. But in real life, sources say he’s been quietly dating SPORTS ILLUSTRATED swimsuit model Melissa Keller, 28, on and off for two years—and they’re going increasingly public. Last week she was by Grenier’s side for his 31st b-day. And on July 14 they cuddled at a Los Feliz bash and, says an onlooker, “seemed oblivious to everyone around them.”
Eva Longoria & Tony Parker
How do you top a glamorous wedding week in France? One option: Yahtzee! After their lavish July 7 nuptials, the Desperate Housewife and her NBA-star hubby enjoyed some alone time—including candlelit dinners and the occasional game of Yahtzee—for their getaway to the private island of Parrot Cay in Turks and Caicos. “It was so romantic; it was just the two of us,” Longoria tells PEOPLE. “We didn’t see people for days, with the exception of room service.” And while the honeymoon may be over (Longoria went back to work July 16 with Parker by her side), the couple are ready for life as husband and wife. “Tony’s been great. With the season over, he’s hanging out on the set with me.”
DOG DAYS OF SUMMER
Forget Ray-Ban sunglasses and itsy-bitsy bikinis—this season’s hottest accessory is a perfectly pettable pooch
Britney Spears (who bought a parakeet June 21) dropped $3,000 on a Yorkie at Pets of Bel Air July 13.
Jim Carrey hit the beach July 8 with his two Labrador pups—gifts from girlfriend Jenny McCarthy.
Katharine McPhee has a new man in her life: Larry, a 1-lb. Chihuahua. “It was love at first sight,” she says.
Step aside, Tinkerbell! Paris Hilton debuted her newest canine companion (a Yorkie named Cinderella) July 14.
Looks like ex-Seattle Grace doc Isaiah Washington will be performing stunts, not surgeries, this fall. The actor (who was let go from Grey’s Anatomy after using an antigay slur) is slated to join the cast of NBC’s Bionic Woman for five episodes. “He has learned his lesson about the way he acts around his fellow actors and in public,” says the network’s cochair Marc Graboff. “He deserves a second chance.” Meanwhile, Washington’s former castmates went back to work July 9. “We started with a vengeance,” Chandra Wilson tells Scoop. “It’s like full, 14-hour days already, so it doesn’t feel like we took a break.” But with Washington gone and former costar Kate Walsh starring in the Grey’s spinoff Private Practice, says Wilson, “there’s something missing. There are definitely big voids.”

Once More, With Feeling
As host of The Singing Bee, Joey Fatone puts karaoke know-it-alls to the test
Q & A
Joey Fatone quick-stepped his way to the Dancing with the Stars finale last May. Now the ex-boy-bander, 30, is singing a different tune—hosting NBC’s karaoke-style reality show The Singing Bee. He gets ‘N Sync with PEOPLE’s Monica Rizzo.
What do you like best about your hosting gig?
It’s so entertaining watching people do this. They don’t have great voices—so that’s funny. When people can’t sing, they sing loud.
You’re just coming off the Dancing with the Stars tour. Ever mess up your songs?
Yes! I’d do this Rat Pack type of medley [with costars Joey McIntyre, Joey Lawrence and Drew Lachey], and I’d sing the Frank Sinatra song “You Make Me Feel So Young.” I sang, “You make me feel so good.” Everybody just laughed at me.
What song lyrics always tripped you up as a kid?
You know that song [Creedence Clearwater Revival’s] “Bad Moon Rising” where they sing, “There’s a bad moon on the rise”? I thought they were saying, “There’s a bathroom on the right.”
When DWTS ended, you were down about 30 lbs. Keeping it off?
I’m trying! I’m going to go back on NutriSystem. I was dancing five to six hours a day. Now that I’m not getting the cardiovascular workout I had been, it’s all about maintaining.
