Joel & Nicole

Just months away from fatherhood, the rocker talks family—and shoots down rumors of trouble

Having a baby is the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to me—and to us,” Joel Madden told Scoop about the pregnancy of girlfriend Nicole Richie, who is due in January. “Having our little family together is going to be great.” The Good Charlotte front man discounted rumors of turmoil for the couple over Richie’s decision to tour with his band and trouble with her pregnancy. “Everything that the others have printed has been completely false,” he said at the Guitar Hero III/Best Buy Legends of Rock Launch Party in L.A. Oct. 27. “I don’t really want to get into detail, but we’re doing great.” On Oct. 30 Richie herself denied a New York Post item that claimed she was smoking. Such reports are “false and unsubstantiated,” she said, adding, “the healthy birth of my child is my No. 1 priority.” Despite the constant media attention, Madden’s focus remains all about baby. “Now we’re just getting home, getting settled in L.A.,” he said, “and getting ready.”

Britney Spears

Britney Spears‘s visitation rights with her two sons, Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, are being scaled back. Why? Court documents released on Oct. 30 included a slew of damning statements by Lisa Hacker, Spears’s parenting coach. Hacker said Spears “rarely engaged with [her] children in either conversation or play” during their monitored time together. Still, Hacker conceded Spears “loves her children.” And music buyers may still love Britney: Industry sources estimate her CD, Blackout, will sell nearly 350,000 copies in its first week. Even before the CD’s release, Spears was out celebrating. On Oct. 27 Spears and her BFF Alli Sims met up with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo at West Hollywood’s Ketchup, followed by a visit to the club Les Deux. On his radio show, Ryan Seacrest told listeners he’d witnessed Spears dirty dancing with the quarterback, a pal of Sims’s. Sims tells Scoop the rumor is “untrue! Tony is a gentleman and Britney wouldn’t do that, especially to a good friend of mine.” (A rep for Seacrest did not comment.)

Jennifer Lopez

It’s been weeks of pregnancy speculation matched by flowing dresses for Jennifer Lopez. Now multiple sources are confirming that the actress-singer is not only pregnant, but expecting twins. “She’s ecstatic,” says one source. During an Oct. 25 shopping spree at Petit Tresor in L.A., she appeared to shop for two. The star hit the celebrity go-to baby boutique with pal actress Leah Remini and two other friends, closing it for two hours. “[They] walked in and went right for the cribs and had their eyes on everything,” says an observer. “The whole crew of ladies walked out with a slew of boxes, not bags, and got into a waiting chauffeured car.” Petit Tresor (left) sells upscale baby furniture, clothing and toys. Lopez’s rep could not be reached for comment.

Carrie Underwood

SPOTTED: Chace Crawford in the company of a pretty blonde … who’s not Carrie Underwood. What would Gossip Girl say? Following a string of outings in New York City with the 24-year-old singer, the Gossip actor, 22, was seen with 30 Rock’s Katrina Bowden, 19, at the Angel Ball on Oct. 29, then at an after-hours party. Crawford was spotted dancing with his arms wrapped around her. Says a source: “He’s been texting her. He told her that he’s not dating Carrie.” But a Crawford pal says that it was Bowden who initiated the flirtation: “Katrina’s been obsessing about Chace ever since she saw him shooting Gossip Girl [which films near 30 Rock].” Crawford’s buddy adds, “Chace is happy with Carrie—he really likes her.” A rep for Underwood declined to comment, while Crawford’s rep denies the flirting. Bowden’s rep says simply, “Katrina is happily single and not dating Chace.”

Pete Wentz

Ouch! Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz (aka Ashlee Simpson‘s boyfriend) broke his ankle jumping during an Oct. 28 concert at New Orleans’ Voodoo Music Experience fest. Nevertheless, “No shows will be canceled,” he promised on his FriendsorEnemies.com blog, adding that he was trying to get a walking cast. “If you see me at a show,” he wrote, “come sign [it].”

Kate & Dax

Dax Shepard joined girlfriend Kate Hudson at her Oct. 27 Halloween bash—dressed as a 1980s-style weight lifter (Hudson, in a black wig and red lipstick, was a sexy sailor). “[They] were adorable,” said a guest. Says another guest: “They only got cute late night. Earlier they barely spoke to each other, and Kate was hanging with her girlfriends while Dax was dancing.”

Dina Lohan & Lynne Spears

They made their daughters famous, but new projects put Dina and Lynne in the spotlight

An as-yet-untitled reality show for E! network, focusing on Dina and her daughter Ali, 13.

Filming started in N.Y.C. on Oct. 30; Dina says the show will air sometime next year.

WHAT TO EXPECT “It’s about empowering women to be successful single mothers,” says Lohan.

OFFSPRING REACTION Says Lohan: “Lindsay is a family member and will lend a helping hand if Ali asks.”

A memoir entitled Pop Culture Mom: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World.

According to sources, the projected release date is Mother’s Day 2008. Aww.

“It’s the truth, but based in love,” coauthor Lorilee Craker told the Grand Rapids Press.

“[Britney is] totally cool” about the book, says a Spears friend.

Hunter Tylo’s

The Bold and the Beautiful’s Hunter Tylo remembered her son Michael, 19, during an emotional Oct. 26 memorial. “A girl in our neighborhood who was [disabled] used to take a walk each day and Michael would wait outside just to say ‘Hi’,” Tylo revealed at the service for her son, who drowned Oct. 18. “He could identify [the] wounded and hurt.” Tylo, who has three other children, is expected back on the set in November.

Most 57-year-olds can’t wait to retire, though maybe not Jay Leno. NBC reaffirmed Oct. 29 Conan O’Brien will take over The Tonight Show in 2009, but a source tells Scoop, “it’s hard for Jay to understand when his show is on top.” But NBC’s fear of losing O’Brien, 44, to another network—as they did David Letterman in 1993—could have prompted the network to act. Speaking of Letterman, with his contract and Jon Stewart’s both expiring in 2010, there is speculation that the Daily Show host may also get a new seat.

The sexy British import livens up death on TV’s Pushing Daisies

On Pushing Daisies the 31-year-old actress plays a woman with a first chance at love and a second chance at life. Friel chats with PEOPLE’s Oliver Jones about cuddling with the crew, Liz Taylor’s influence and the show’s focus on her curvy physique.

Your character Chuck came back from the dead. What’s her outlook on life?

She views everything with this great glee and sense of discovery. I’ve based a lot of her on Gracie, my 2-year-old daughter [with boyfriend, actor David Thewlis].

If you touch your costar Lee Pace onscreen, you perish. Are you hands-off during takes?

We tried that … I was dead by day three! I’m someone who really likes to touch people. I’m the person who every morning gives my crew a cuddle and a kiss!

Do you love your wardrobe of glam ’50s-style dresses?

They’re into voluptuous Hollywood shapes on the show; there’s a lot of attention drawn to [costar] Kristin [Chenoweth’s] and my breasts as the season goes on.

How did you get your spot-on American accent?

Books on tape! The most helpful was Liz Taylor. I listened to her read her autobiography. With so many American actors doing English accents, I thought I’d win a point for England. Hey, we can do yours too!
