SPLIT: Kirsten and Jake
Spider-Man’s crush is back in the dating pool: Kirsten Dunst and boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal have officially called it quits. “Kirsten and Jake remain the best of friends,” her rep said on July 20. “Details regarding when and why their romantic relationship stopped are not being provided, but suffice it to say it happened some time ago. They are still very close.” The couple were introduced by Gyllenhaal’s sister Maggie in September 2002. (“I don’t talk about my brother,” was all Maggie would say after the split.) They were rarely seen apart afterwards, often photographed walking their dog or sipping coffee at sidewalk cafes. Dunst, 22, and Gyllenhaal, 23, even worked out at the gym together to beef up for their respective roles in Spider-Man 2 and The Day After Tomorrow. “I’m really happy and in love,” Dunst told PEOPLE in May. And so it seemed. They moved into a $1.7 million L.A. house with their German Shepherd mix, Atticus. They gave each other promise rings last fall and adopted a cat in May. However the two have acknowledged the pressures that come with fame. “It’s hard to maintain [a relationship],” Gyllenhaal said in May. “Kirsten and I know what’s real and what’s not.”
Lindsay Lohan in Love
Now that Lindsay Lohan has officially stepped out with boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama as one of Hollywood’s hottest new couples, the teen queen isn’t afraid to gush. “He’s a great guy,” Lohan told Scoop while attending the Prada store opening in Beverly Hills with her beau on July 15. “Seriously, I think he’s one of the best guys any girl could be with. He’s really sweet. It’s very fun.” A friend of the couple’s bolsters Lohan’s sentiment. “She’s really into him,” the pal says. “She seems really smitten and enamored of the fact that he is [six years] older…. He’s a little more reserved.”
Though the two were first spotted together in May, they kept their romance officially under wraps until Lohan’s 18th-birthday bash on July 2, when they were kissing and dancing until 3 a.m. at Avalon, the Hollywood nightclub. (For the record, Lohan says that Valderrama, 24, made the first move by asking her out. “Of course!” she says. “A girl should never do that.”) Since then, the pair have been seen together at parties and, most recently, a kabbalah center in Los Angeles. Lohan has also taken to wearing the red string bracelet associated with the practice. “Lindsay is curious [about kabbalah] and has been for a while,” says a friend. Whether the two have found spiritual enlightenment or not, Lohan says for now she’s just having fun. “I’m still young,” she says.
A Boy for Britney’s Man
Sometime around 10:30 a.m. on July 20, Shar Jackson, 28, the ex-girlfriend of Britney Spears‘s future husband, dancer Kevin Federline, gave birth to a son in an Orange County, Calif., hospital. “She was getting” excited about this a few days ago,” says a friend of Jackson’s. “She’s doing really well.” Federline, 26, who also has a 2-year-old daughter, Kori, with Jackson, drove a Range Rover to the hospital three hours later to visit the former Moesha actress and the newborn. (At press time, a name for the baby had not been released.) “[Kevin] will be a great father,” says Duane Hurley a friend of Federline’s.
Meanwhile Spears, 22, who did not accompany Federline to the hospital, spent the afternoon buying flowers and hitting a tanning salon. Later that evening, she and her fiancé were spotted outside her Santa Monica apartment. “She was flashing her ring to photographers from her balcony,” says a source. “It looked like she was showing that everything was still okay between them.”
TORI in Italy
Tori Spelling went on her honeymoon to Italy and came back a virgin. While in Lake Como, the former 90210 star, who wed actor-writer Charlie Shanian July 3, was dining on trout and free-range fried chicken at Locanda dell’Isola Comacina—one of Lake Como resident George Clooney‘s favorite restaurants—when she was selected to participate in a local custom said to ward off an ancient curse. “She was the vestal virgin,” says the restaurant’s owner, meaning Spelling drank a brandy, sugar and coffee concoction as part of an informal pageant detailing the area’s history. The newlyweds eventually arrived in Positano, where they window-shopped for ceramics and dined on lobster.
RONSTADT PLUGS FILM, SHOWN EXIT
Linda Ronstadt dedicated “Desperado” to director Michael Moore at the Aladdin hotel-casino in Las Vegas on July 17, encouraging the audience to see his antiwar movie Fahrenheit 9/11. Some booed, some cheered, and about 100 people in the crowd of 4,500 walked out. Aladdin officials then had Ronstadt—who earlier spoke about not wanting to sing her greatest hits in Vegas—escorted off the property, vowing she would not be back. Moore soon offered to join Ronstadt, 58, at the Aladdin for a duet of “America the Beautiful.” No go. “The issue isn’t Michael Moore,” said an Aladdin spokeswoman. “It’s that she chose to make our theater a political platform.”
While promoting his latest film, A Home at the End of the World, Colin Farrell, 28, spoke to Scoop about the intricacies of his world, touching on fatherhood, romance and his love of Ireland.
Last year your mother said she worried that you smoke and drink too much. How’s she feeling today?
On my day off, I might have a few beers, but my mother is proud of me. She’s always been proud of me.
Does she read the stories written about you?
She does. She puts half of them in her scrapbook.
Do you balance your career with a personal life?
Not really. Maybe I should be thinking more into the future. The present is pretty good. I’m working hard. I have a beautiful son [James, 10 months], and as long as I can be with him and as long as he always knows where his dad is and I can go to work as well, I’m fine.
How has fatherhood changed you?
I don’t know. It’s not a major metamorphosis. The first time you hold your baby in your arms, a sense of strength and love washes over you. I love him in a different way and in a stronger way than I love my mother.
Are you dating anyone right now?
No. Not at all, man.
In A Home at the End of the World, your character goes through life without worries. Are you like that?
I’m a pretty open fella. You might’ve guessed. And I’m fairly gentle.
What kind of roles would you like to play next?
I’ve never had a master plan, and it’s done me okay so far. So I just read [stuff] and see what I’m going to do. I don’t direct it. It directs me.
Are you comfortable living and working in Ireland?
Very. It’s my home. It’ll always be my home.
Do you go back a lot?
I can’t. I’ve been on the road. I’ve lived out of a suitcase for five years.
Do you miss Dublin?
They have the best Guinness in the world.
By a mile. Nowhere comes close.
