Risk Takers

“She has revolutionized the way a Hollywood ingenue dresses,” says one People panelist of KATE HUDSON‘S grown-up fashion sense. Here, Goldie’s girl shimmers in a Julien Mac-donald gown at the London Film Festival’s opening-night gala in November.

With her long, lean lines and innate confidence, HEATHER GRAHAM makes the most of whatever she wears. At June’s American Fashion Awards in New York City, it was a dramatic Dior combo of a short floral print dress under a transparent red and gold overlay.

“I love her versatile style,” says designer Valentino of JENNIFER LOPEZ, whom he outfitted for the Golden Globes. “She can swing from glamorous evening gowns, like ‘Hollywood goes couture,’ to ‘hip-hop diva.’ ”

Who dresses with more joy than SARAH JESSICA PARKER (in Ungaro at the Golden Globes)? “She is an influential trendsetter, more so than any other celeb right now,” says People’s Steven Cojocaru.

Whether it’s a flannel shirt and jeans or an alternative tux, like the cutting-edge Armani he chose for the Oscars, RUSSELL CROWE wears his clothes with attitude, says our panel.

“When she dresses up, she’s an absolute goddess,” says Cojocaru of ANGELINA JOUE, who shone at the Golden Globes in a platinum Versace gown. “And with the Billy Bob tattoo, she has that exciting good-girl, bad-girl thing going on.”

Grace Kelly in the tropics? No, it was model turned Pearl Harbor actress JAMES KING in Hawaii for the film’s May premiere, where she did her beguiling best (in diaphanous red Prada) to bring a retro look to the occasion. Even her lipstick was perfect, notes our panel.

Her flawless skin is her most valuable accessory, so it’s no wonder HALLE BERRY favors outfits like the revealing Theory jumpsuit she wore to a luncheon in Las Vegas last March. Says Cojocaru: “She knows what to wear for any event.”

At L.A.’s Independent Spirit Awards in March, Bush Hour 2S ZHANG ZIYI reflected her culture in a gleaming mandarin-collar jumpsuit by Hong Kong design house Blanc de Chine. “She’s not afraid of flash,” says Cojocaru.

Great carriage and strong shoulders help JVIINNIE DRIVER carry off body-hugging dresses like the Valentino she wore to an L.A. fund-raiser last fall. Even with attention-grabbing accessories, like the bag and wrap, she never looks costumey.

For the N.Y.C, premiere of The Legend of Bagger Vance in October, WILL SMITH hit a hole in one with this sporty Robert Mala suit, which was designed especially for the event.
