Quiet Moment for Rose Mary Woods

Posted on

The Capitol behind them had become a battleground of rancor over Watergate, executive privilege, the tapes and possible impeachment. But for the moment, President Nixon’s personal secretary Rose Mary Woods and frequent escort Robert Gray, a prominent Washington advertising executive, had found a moment of serenity. The occasion was a gala wine-tasting party hosted by California’s congressional delegation, under a tent beside the Capitol’s reflecting pool. As 800 guests inside quaffed the state’s best vintages and nibbled cheese and pâté, the couple slipped out to the edge of the pool, watched the day turn to dusk and momentarily forgot the headlines.
