Prince Felipe of Spain: Sexiest Royal

Posted on

He’s a former Olympic yachtsman, a fighter pilot and the heir to the Spanish throne, but when 29-year-old Prince Felipe de Bonbón smiles, “he’s got the air of a small boy,” observes Madrid society writer Cristina Aldaz, “and women fall for that.” With his blue eyes, 6’5″ frame and master’s degree in international relations from Georgetown University, he would be a catch even if he weren’t the only son of King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia. Since he is, Felipe is widely considered to be the most eligible bachelor in the world. Though he may feel pressure to make a royal match, a July poll showed that 66 percent of Spaniards believe that he should marry for love and not out of duty. And Felipe gave hope to millions of women at sister Cristina’s October wedding to professional handball player Iñaki Urdangarín when he told friends, “Next time ’round, it’s my turn.” Most recently linked with 26-year-old Countess Caroline of Waldburg, Felipe keeps his private life under wraps. Though he sometimes parties late at Madrid nightspots, he is often likened to his intelligent, understated mother—born a princess of Greece—with whom he shares a love of classical music and a distaste for bullfights. “You only have to look at the way he looks at his mother or his sisters [Cristina and Elena] to realize what a gentle and sensitive person he is,” says columnist Jean Alien of Madrid’s Guidepost. “He gives off good, squeaky-clean vibes. He has a kind of tender charm.”
