Tilda Swinton, Goran Visnjic

Featured attraction

After her teenage son’s male lover turns up dead near the family’s house, a mother (Swinton) barely pauses before swinging into action, dumping the body in nearby Lake Tahoe and getting rid of any signs of struggle. When the corpse is found, she does whatever it takes—including paying off blackmailers—to protect her son.

Swinton’s fierce portrait of an anguished but determined mom is the main reason, but not the only one, to see The Deep End, a taut, observant thriller cowritten and directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel. In a supporting role, Visnjic (ER‘s Dr. Kovac) makes for the sexiest of extortionists. (R)
